THE WALL破墙

A city becomes a wall.
A runner breaks through.

One wall. Two meanings.

Marathon runners know what it means to hit the wall. Often around 30 km, energy runs low and the race reaches its hardest point. Pushing through it is the breakthrough.

In this poster, Shenzhen literally rises into a wall, and the runners’ paths climb its surface. Some viewers see a city turned upright. Runners recognise the barrier they must overcome. Both readings belong to THE WALL.

The route comes to life.

The runners’ paths unfold from the street to the city wall. This 19-second film brings movement and a pulse to the poster.

From street to city.

Buildings and the coastline curve upward into a readable city map

The folded city

Nearby streets and buildings unfold into a map in the distance. Inspired by the horizonless projection in BERG’s Here & There, the image holds a street-level view and the whole city together.

Blue, violet and rose running paths pass through the street and climb the folded city

The runners’ pulse

The route shifts from blue and violet to rose, using simulated heart rate to express effort. Against the city’s blue and black print grain, the runners’ paths form a continuous line of movement.

From city model to print texture.

Studies in night scenes, daylight and halftone led to a Risograph-inspired image with blue and black grain and a coloured route.
